A healthy lineup of local, music is on tap for Tampa Bay this week. Have a look at some of the highlights below.
Las Nubes w/Calyx/Permanent Makeup/Joyeater A bilingual answer to Best Coast or the Breeders, Las Nubes generally defies genrefication thanks to the unorthodox time signatures and a vocal from Ale Campos which sounds at home during head-bangers and quiet, contemplative numbers. Bassist Nina Carolina and drummer Emile Milgrim round out the lineup for a well-seasoned Miami band that arrives fresh of the release of a new video for “QSW” that was released on Monday. Calyx, a pizza-powered pop-punk trio from Pittsburgh, plays support along with local favorites Permanent Makeup and Joyeater. This Lucky You Tattoo show is all-ages. Thurs. March 28. The Urbane Cowboys Something’s cooking on the Urbane Cowboys campfire, and fans of the long-running Bay area Americana outfit (est. 1999) may get to hear some of it when the band headlines a free, sorta-late night gig at Ella’s Americana Folk Art Café where Urbane principals Kamran Mir and Steven Schumacher show off what the band and its new drummer have been whipping up. Jordan Esker & the Hundred Percent w/Vetnough/Ivy Alex After releasing of of CL’s favorite local albums of 2018, Jordan Esker and the Hundred Percent is unleashing new music again. “My Own Miserable” gets the release treatment during this show happening at The Bends, and the secret highlight on this local lineup is an opening set from songwriter Ivy Alex whose jazz-influenced, piano-driven pop has a cheeky side, too (we’ve played it back eight times, and it totally sounds like she sings, “How could I forget, you gave me head, expecting nothing,” on “Lust”).
