After Mod Sun’s 2017 set at Crowbar, CL contributor Michael Fritz wrote that the 32-year-old rapper born Derek Smith “had the most stage energy I’ve seen from any performer since Matt & Kim.”

A literally intoxicating set unfolded (“He did stunts like shotgunning a hit of a blunt with a girl in the front row and drinking a scary amount of Jack Daniel's,” Fritz added), and we’ll have to wait and see if Mr. Sun — who’ll play songs from a forthcoming 2019 album — does it again during a Thursday-night set of the “hippy hop” that’s forced Mod Sun into some of the biggest headlining sets of his career.

Mod Sun. Thurs. June 6, 7 p.m. $25–$35. Orpheum, Ybor City. eventbrite.com.
