Brothers John and Donald Tardy are no strangers to large metal festivals. This year, the leader and drummer of Obituary put their more than three decades of experience into producing one of their own that’s geared at fans of old school metal: the inaugural Florida Metal Festival.
Obituary leads the pack with their groove-laden thrashy style. Muscling into the co-headlining spot is another superstar vet of Tampa’s scene and arguably the most satanic band in death metal, Deicide, stoking anticipation with the potential of new music from a forthcoming album Sex with the Devil, but delivering a high energy, face-crushing performance either way. These two behemoths are joined by some laudable out-of-state acts – North Carolina’s thrash metalists Corrosion of Conformity, New York hardcore outfit Madball, and Chicago’s brutal death metal group Broken Hope included. Rounding out the promising lineup is Trouble, Malevolent Creation, Atheist, Generichrist, and Battle of the Bands winners Untoten Krieg and Unsung Destroyer.
