A member of the Best of the Bay-nominated Opera Tampa will have insane family tree stories to tell at this free jazz workshop. Sara Elisa Villa’s father was the first cellist in the Medellin Philharmonic Orchestra for a time. Grandpa was peace activist Alvaro Villa, who sang with the Von Trapp Family Singers, and established new neighborhoods for struggling families until he was captured and murdered in Colombia.

The workshop features a sneak peek into the youngest Villa’s creative process and how she blends her culture into her music. The day ends with a free concert from Sara and her parents, and while it’s open to the public, you have to register for the workshop.

Tickets to see Sara Elisa Villa and Company play TECO Theater at Tampa’s David A. Straz Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, Oct. 21 are free.
