Janelle Monáe has had a great week.
The 32-year-old songwriter and actor got to further distance herself from our asshole president, and even came out as pansexual in a new interview with Rolling Stone.
“Being a queer black woman in America, someone who has been in relationships with both men and women — I consider myself to be a free-ass motherfucker,” Monáe, who initially identified as bisexual said. “[I] read about pansexuality and was like, ‘Oh, these are things that I identify with too.’ I’m open to learning more about who I am.”
Monáe — who is headed to Jannus Live on July 26 — is sharing even more of who she is with fans with the release of her new album, Dirty Computer. The album is Monáe’s first since 2013’s Electric Lady, and this show is Monáe’s Bay area debut.
BORN IN THE WRONG GENERATION
Review: Janelle Monáe, The Electric Lady
“A lot of this album is a reaction to the sting of what it means to hear people in my family say, ‘All gay people are going to hell,'” she also said. “I want young girls, young boys, nonbinary, gay, straight, queer people who are having a hard time dealing with their sexuality, dealing with feeling ostracized or bullied for just being their unique selves, to know that I see you. This album is for you. Be proud.”
