The elephant in the, err, park—Clearwater’s Coachman Park, that is—on Saturday afternoon was that due to an ongoing health issue, blues legend Buddy Guy pulled out of his Clearwater Jazz Holiday headlining slot at the last minute. Luckily, attendees who didn’t trade their tickets in for a different date kept an open mind, and ended up loving the hell out of European flamenco outfit Gipsy Kings—still featuring original lead singer Nicolas Reyes—and its plethora of acoustic guitars and all-Spanish lyrics.
Before that, Latin rock band Los Lobos got through plenty of its 50-year-old catalog, even concluding the set with a fusion of its iconic cover of Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba,” and The Young Rascals’ “Good Lovin’.” And steel pedal guitarist Roosevelt Collier and his band was originally supposed to perform on one of the free, side stages in or around Coachman Park, but ended up bringing his self-described “dirty funk swampy grime”—praised by the likes of The Allman Brothers Band and Jelly Roll—to his opening slot on the main stage.
