UPDATE 6/2 12:35 p.m.
Ronnie James Dio would’ve turned 77 years old next month, and while it’s been almost a decade since stomach cancer killed him in 2010, a hologram of the heavy-metal icon will tour the U.S. in his stead.
Reps for the tour said that the St. Petersburg show has been canceled.
Promoters at Ruth Eckerd Hall have announced that they’re bringing the “Dio Returns” tour to St. Petersburg’s Palladium Theater on June 2. The 90-minute program has been on the road since 2016 and is the second hologram tour to visit Tampa Bay in the last year (Roy Orbison’s digital ghost was in Clearwater in November). Tickets go on sale Friday, April 12 at 10 a.m., and they’ll cost fans $49.50-$99.50.
It’ll be cool to see a rock show in the Palladium’s Hough Hall, which is normally home to jazz and classical shows. Diehard Dio fans will be happy to know that this tour features members of his longtime backing band — Craig Goldy, Simon Wright, Scott Warren, and Bjorn Englen — plus Judas Priest and Yngwie Malmsteen singer Tim “Ripper” Owens and Lynch Mob vocalist Oni Logan.
