The first Saturday in May is a nice and busy one, at least as far as concerts go. Check out the breakdown for May 7 below…
Iron Reagan with Necrid, American Party Machine A hardcore supergroup of sorts, Richmond quintet Iron Reagan p encompasses current and former members of Municipal Waste, Cannabis Corpse and Darkest Hour (vocalist Tony Foresta, guitarist Phil Hall and drummer Ryan Parrish). Their sound is just as punk-fast, pithy and brutally ferocious as you’d expect from a crossover thrash act of such pedigree, with dual axe assaults of crunchy riffs and ripping solos, ragged barked and shouted lyrics, and cheekily cynical quasi-political subject matter. (Sample song titles: “I Ripped That Testament a New Asshole,” “Eat Shit and Live,” “In Greed We Trust,” “Bill of Fights.”) (New World Brewery, Ybor City)
set and setting with SPAR, Disevered, Sentries We haven’t seen set and setting perform in St. Petersburg since the local post-rock/metal outfit opened for Inter Arma at Fubar last April. That was more than a year ago, ya’ll. Their blend of instrumental atmospherics and ear-blasting climaxes are built on the rigid-pounding rhythms of two drummers paired with guitars that vary from crunchy metallic washes to tremolo-heavy feedback-looped solos to the finely-plucked passages of the calmer melodic interludes. Three other Bay area acts with loud aesthetics also appear on this night, including crusty stoner metal rockers SPAR. (Fubar, St. Petersburg)
Beebs and Her Money Makers with Resinated, Milka Ramos Orlando’s kazoo-tooting belter Michelle Beebs and her money-making bandmates return to the Skipperdome for the second time in less than four months, bringing brass-blasted post-Third Wave ska sounds and plenty of infectious high-octane energy. No new material, but Beebs is running a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for a forthcoming solo LP; if you dig her peacock-colorful swagger, you have until May 10 to donate. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa)
Green Sunshine Farewell Show They aren’t abandoning Tampa Bay for greener pastures elsewhere nor are they calling it quits, but funk/hip hop/jam grinding ensemble Green Sunshine is taking a hiatus. According to the Facebook invite, this show pays tribute to their fans, “as we play a setlist created by you, playing your favorite originals and covers that you've come to love over the years.” Admission is free. (Ringside Café, St. Petersburg)
GreyMarket Album Release Party with Bangarang, Sun Signs The return of GreyMarket has been met with no small amount of buzz (the local experimental rock duo was inactive for a too-long span), but they’ve finished a new full-length, The Stress Kills, and unleash it on this night. Check out a review of the LP on here. (Crowbar, Ybor City)
Glen Phillips Toad in the Wet Sprocket’s lyrical guitar-toting leader returns to his venue away from home for another intimate solo performance following the release of his new Live at the Belly Up concert LP. (Hideaway Café & Recording Studio, St. Petersburg)
Soapbox Soliloquy Album Release Party w/Deadborns/Swept Jasmine Deja is one of those people with so much talent, it’s hard to figure out just how she manages to juggle eating and sleeping amid her seemingly inexhaustible music making. She’s the ostensible leader of two bands (Selectric and Veiny Hands) in addition to pushing out tunes via her solo Soapbox Soliloquy project. This release show celebrates the completion of Heady Stones, her second Soapbox full-length; review on here. (The Bends, St. Petersburg)
