✔️ Dex Romweber w/One Trip Little Jack White has mentioned how The White Stripes’ aesthetic owes a lot to Dex Romweber, who co-founded North Carolina rockabilly band Flat Duo Jets. Romweber’s primitive style of post-punk and roll was famously documented in a 2011 rock and roll documentary Two Headed Cow, and while Romweber, now 51 years old, is some ways away from those youthful days, his heavyweight contributions to the story of American roots music are still revered by fans who were drawn to the sound Romweber made by combining influences like Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette and even Ludwig van Beethoven. This Thursday-night show comes a year and a half after Romweber played Ella’s in Seminole Heights and should be interesting since it's in the close quarters of The Attic at Rock Brothers. One Trip Little — whose frontman, Justin Little, spent a significant amount of time on the road with Romweber — opens the show. (The Attic at Rock Brothers Brewing, Ybor City) INFO
SMOKE OUT WITH THE BOYS
St. Petersburg's Danny and Alex make turtleneck rock for the masses
Left Lane Ent. Proudly Presents: Art & Soul w/J’Nelle/Danny & Alex/Frxxman/HeyeYella/Jander Grey/NDO/Venue Bleu Hall & Oates might be in town this weekend, but fans of those blue-eyed soul crooners might do well to watch a couple of local boys — Danny & Alex — mix it up as part of an always-eclectic Art & Soul bill that features some funk and soul (Venus Bleu), R&B (NDO), hip-hop (HeyeYella) and even comedy care of Jander Grey. Luis Enrique He was the 1990s’ Prince of Salsa, but Nicaraguan salsa star Luis Enrique — who pioneered the “salsa sensual” style — is still intriguing, even at 55 years old. His 2007 album, Dentro y Fuera, served as a 20th anniversary release for his career, and the Latin Grammy winner should see plenty of devoted fans on the floor at this Thursday-night gig. PUNCTUATION MATTERS
Don't tell your dad about this new Tampa punk band called Clang!
✔️ Jitters w/Clang!/Sean Hamilton Nathan Corder is an important cog in the machine that is avant-pop group Nude Tayne (which is playing a show at Microgroove on June 24), but he’s also one half of Jitters, a duo that leans toward experimental sounds in its pursuit of speedy, mathematical music that bends and then breaks conventional listening norms by deploying weird, proggy loops and the absolutely jaw-dropping drumming of Danny Piechocki. Jitters — which is playing Miami’s Psych Fest — is joined by a new post-punk noise band Clang! (not your dad’s clang, kids) and experimental percussionist Sean Hamilton at this book-and-record-store show where a $5 donation is suggested. (Mojo Books & Records, Tampa) INFO
✔️ Timothy Eerie w/Pleasures/Soapbox Soliloquy/Oxford Noland The homegrown indie-rock game is strong this week (shoutout to Jitters, Nude Tayne and Brother Cephus), and this show is no exception. Built around former Florida boy Timothy Eerie — who is currently making name for himself by playing swamp-born, acid-taking psych-rock in Austin, Texas — this bill also features two more mind-bending rock outfits (Pleasures, Soapbox Soliloquy) and Oxford Noland, which builds otherworldly soundscapes into its own special brand of folk and Americana. ✔️ Sleeping Pills Tour Kickoff w/Jensen Serf Company/MTVH1N1 Sleeping Pills is anything but lethargic. The Tampa-based rock band continues to evolve ("dark surf post-punk" is the latest descriptor) as has recently absorbed producer Patrick Brady (of Merchandise fame) into the lineup. The band — led by Phil Taylor — kicks off a 24-date U.S. tour with the show at Seminole Heights' Mermaid Tavern. Watch a new video for "Drift Away" below. (Mermaid Tavern, Tampa) INFO
