Small Talks magazine launched online five-and-a-half years ago as “a music publication by fans for fans.” Then it through the pandemic as it turned a spotlight on artists from, and passing through, the southeast, from DBMK, Charlie, Upsahl, Squid and others. It also covered community events like Gasparilla Music Festival—and now plans to come offline with the release of its first-ever zine.
On the cover of Small Talks Issue 001 is Bay area collective We’re Sweet Girls, who’ve helped Small Talks curate a full takeover of St. Pete hotspots Bandit Coffee Co. and its Small Bar next door.
As the world tries to say the print is on the way out, Hintz, a photographer who grew up in Shore Acres before moving to New York City, knows that there are others like her who value having something physical to take home.
Citing Penny Magazine, Hintz said that she and her team just wanted to create something beautiful and that Reynes, who designs the pages, and Bodine, who did the bulk of the writing, would be the right people to bring the website to life.
“I wanted to give them kind of a space to really let their creativity shine, because they’re just two people that I think are so talented and so amazing,” Hintz added. “I think it’s so important to go hard for your hometown, even when you don’t live there anymore. You know, it’s still your hometown, still where you grew up.”
There’s no cover for the Small Talks magazine release happening Friday, Aug. 1 at Bandit Coffee Co. and Small Bar in St. Petersburg.
