In a world where folks are trying to rationalize a mob of Trump supporters chanting “send her back,” Woody Guthrie’s songs (“This Land Is Your Land,” “I Ain’t Got No Home”) resound loudly. Educator Joy Katzen-Guthrie will spend 90 minutes leading a discussion about the life that led Guthrie to become an American icon.
“Folk songs, with few exceptions before the 20th century, expressed the aspects of life that were unchangeable. They expressed the joy, mystery, and pain of what life was without an expectation of having the power to affect it — except, possibly, through the world to come,” Guthrie, who is not related to the singer, told CL. “Woody, by contrast, wrote songs specifically designed to inspire people to change.”
