Vincentian singer Gamal Doyle, aka Skinny Fabulous, is one of the biggest soca artists around.
What’s soca? For the uninitiated, soca means the "(So)ul of (Ca)lypso”—a fusion of African-Calypso and East Indian rhythms. It has nothing to do with American soul, so don’t go expecting Otis Redding covers. Check out Doyle’s latest single “Act Normal” for what kind of NC-17 party to expect.
Heads up: the part of the event that was described as a “cooler fete” or BYOB is not happening anymore, so do not bring your own drinks. The event page exclaims in all-caps that coolers and bottles are not allowed, so save it for the after party.
Soca Mayhem Fete: Skinny Fabulous. Saturday, May 22, 10 p.m. $25-$40. Dunns River Island Cafe, Tampa. eventbrite.com
