In sprit of the NCAA tourney and now that we're down to the last few games that will decide the Final Four, I've picked my top four tracks from this week's playlist. Play on!
After a six-year hiatus the ever eclectic Gorillaz just announced their new record Humanz, due April 28. They celebrated by oddly releasing four new songs from the effort. Of the four that were released, I plucked "Andromeda" for this week's mixtape. A bouncy beat, twinkling synths and Albarn's repetition of his “take it in your heart” lyrics keep things light on this soaring track. Welcome back, Gorillaz.
As Fog Lake, Aaron Powell performs dream-pop music that can be soothing, but also melancholic as well. Songs about self-doubt and lost love fill the majority of the his new LP, Dragonchaser. The beat on "Push" is reminiscent of an old school hip-hop beat that's been toned down, but it's those swirling guitars and lo-fi effects that really cement the nocturnal sound Powell was seeking to create. Sweet dreams.
Kendrick Lamar just unleashed his new track, "The Heart Part 4," and the Compton emcee held very little back, but what else is new? It's no secret Lamar has a way with words, but his new track is lyrical onslaught at its finest. He calls out Trump, Big Sean and Drake without breaking a sweat, while the production actually changes three different times throughout. As the song comes to a close, Lamar also seems to have purposely leaked that his new untitled record will be dropping soon with: "You know what time it is, ante up, this is in forever." "Y'all got till April the 7 to get ya'll shit together." Thanks, Kendrick! I've got that date marked on my calendar.
Amtrac closes this playlist out with the buttery-smooth "Informal Disco." This seven-minute journey through mid-tempo grooves, beautiful synths and pianos makes this the perfect driving tune. He creates an unbelievable ambiance throughout. I highly suggest you give his new EP 1987 a worthy listen.
