✔️ Art & Soul w/Anthony Ortiz/Dabron Kain/Ella Jet/Mike Mass/Modern Medusa/Shevonne Philidor Last year, CL caught up with St. Petersburg rapper Dabron Kain to talk about the darker parts of his introverted psyche. On a new album, Kain lets listeners in on the bright side. Clocking in at about 25 minutes, The Light Album is a quick, upbeat trip through Kain’s mind wherein his tastes head to the Caribbean (“Dominicana (Baby Bad)”) en route to piecing together one of the better hip-hop releases of the last six months. We’re fully expecting the Art & Soul house band to jump in for some tunes and will wait until last call to see Art & Soul co-founder Jai Price jump on a Light Album highlight (“Make the World Lit”) before the night is over. Several of the artists we detailed in this Music Issue (keyboardist Julian Carrington, songwriter Ella Jet) also make appearances at this basement session. Talk To Mark Cover bands very seldom make it to these pages (especially on a short week like this one), but Mark Murphy’s seven-piece outfit complete with a string section is a worthy exception thanks to the band’s more than a decade-long track record of re-inventing all the hits of your dad’s childhood. We know it’s too soon for another full tribute set to The Cars (the band just did one at Jannus in May), but you might think Talk to Mark would be interested in giving us just what we needed.
