Tampa Bay wasn’t on the initial itinerary for David Byrne‘s latest tour supporting his new album, American Utopia.
Well, it’s all flowers now as the Talking Heads frontman has announced new tour dates, including a September 30 stop at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg. It’s his first stop in the area since a Tampa Theatre show in 2008.
The 65-year-old songwriter will be backed by a “12-piece untethered band” at the show where Merrill Garbus’s Tune-Yards project will open the show.
Tickets start at $59.50 and will go on sale Friday, March 16 at 10 a.m. EDT. More information is available below.
Other Florida dates include, September 26 (Jacksonville, Florida Theater), September 28 (Orlando, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts) and September 29 (Miami Beach, The Fillmore).
Byrne just released a video for “Everybody’s Coming to My House” from his recently released solo album American Utopia, and it features a performance of the song by Detroit School of Arts (DSA) Vocal Jazz Ensemble students (see below).
“When I saw what the DSA students did with my song, it completely changed the way I thought of it. In fact, it changed the meaning of the song—I realized it was about inclusion, welcoming, and not being alone,” Byrne said in a press release. “It’s a more generous interpretation of the song than what I do with my voice. We ARE all in the same house—if we want to be. Just goes to show how a song can change (radically!) depending on who is singing it.”
