✔️ Set and Setting LP release w/Jensen Serf Company/Pipe Dreamer CL named Set and Setting the Bay area’s “Best Export” at our Best of the Bay ceremony, and now the St. Petersburg post-rock group is making good on the designation. Tabula Rasa, the band’s fourth full-length, was recorded and mixed by Ryan Haft (Torche, Wrong) in Miami and may be Set and Setting’s heaviest album to date (it’s also the band’s first under the banner of Berlin’s Pelagic Records). This album release show at St. Petersburg DIY spot Paper Crane is the band’s last local show for the foreseeable future and finds it playing the record in full before heading to London, where it kicks off a 16-date European tour on October 17. Follow the link to CL's new Florida music playlist below to listen to the album. (Paper Crane, St. Petersburg) INFO

CL MUSIC'S NEW MUSIC FRIDAY
Listen to this playlist featuring Florida's best new music

Romeo Santos Remember when the King of Bachata skipped Tampa and hit Orlando for a March 2018 date instead? Well, get ready to make Romeo Santos your “Héroe Favorito” again. The 36-year-old Bronx Bomber of Bachata and former Aventura boy toy is back at Tampa’s Amalie Arena for his first show in the area since 2015. (Amalie Arena, Tampa) INFO

Secret Walls w/DJ Fader DJ Fader mans the ones and twos while mural artists battle in a competition to see who can create the most dope black and while mural art while a packed Jannus courtyard watches. Free with registration, but it's $10 at the door if you don't sign up in advance. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg) INFO

Tony Franklin Masterclass He played on Shuggie Otis’ 2018 album Inter-Fusion, but Tony “The Fretless Monster” Franklin is best known for the bass work he contributed to albums by eccentric folk-rock genius Roy Harper and '80s hard-rock supergroup The Firm (which had Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers in its lineup). This is a free early evening (5:30 p.m.) clinic that’ll fill up early and be over by 7 p.m. (Replay Guitar Exchange, Tampa) INFO

TODD IS GODD
Interview: Todd Snider waxes on Hard Working Americans' mission to save the world

✔️ Todd Snider w/Rorey Carroll It’s been five months since Tampa saw Todd Snider fronting Hard Working Americans at Gasparilla Music Festival, and you can expect a full house when the 51-year-old East Nashville songwriter returns to the Bay area for an intimate solo set that’ll showcase his one-of-a-kind oddball showmanship and a songbook that celebrates the underdog each and every chance it gets. Bonus points since Rorey Carroll (another Nashville songwriter who’s been likened to “Gillian Welch’s long lost, more devilish little sister”) opens this show, which is a benefit for community radio station WMNF 88.5 FM. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa) INFO

✔️ Cold Medicine w/Grampire/Crystallized Phil Taylor’s obsession with '90s Memphis hardcore rap from guys like Tommy Lee Wright III, Kingpin Skinny Pimp and Gangsta Pat played a big role in the beats and many production aspects on a new album from Cold Medicine, the new dark, synth-driven project from Taylor (who also fronts Bay area rock band Sleeping Pills). The rest of the effort hints at some of Taylor’s other influences (Soft Moon, Staccato Du Mal, Front 242) and was home-recorded before being mixed and mastered by Pat Brady of Tampa indie-rock band Merchandise. This show is the last local show before an 11-date tour that sees Cold Medicine go all the way up New York before finally ending up in Orlando on November 17. Grampire plays its first show ever to kick off the night. (The Bends, St. Petersburg) INFO

ROAD TRIP
Copeland's Aaron Marsh has curated the ultimate Lakeland local music playlist

✔️ Copeland Lakeland deserves this. After nearly 20 years of being the spiritual home of Copeland (and the literal home of frontman Aaron Marsh, who runs the Vanguard Room studio there), the atmospheric indie-rock band will join the full Imperial Symphony Orchestra (featuring many members who’ve played on any one of Copeland’s six studio albums) for a one-of-a-kind hometown show at the RP Funding Center’s Youkey Theatre. (Youkey Theatre, Lakeland) INFO

Matthew Mayes & John Meyer Not John Mayer, but John Meyer, a longtime Jupiter Coyote sidekick who was finally added to the lineup on lead guitar. On Friday, Meyer and Matthew Mayes (guitar player and vocalist for the North Carolina bluegrass-leaning jam band) play a duo set within the cozy confines of the Craftsman House. Advance tickets are advised. (Craftsman House Gallery, St. Petersburg) INFO

✔️ Sunshine Jones Dubtribe Sound System alum Sunshine Jones plays his only Florida show at Hooch and Hive, where he’ll improvise his way through a set of dance music that’s been the fabric of his 14 studio albums and famed Sunday Soul interviews. No computers were used in the creation, production and mastering of Jones’ latest album, The Urgency of Change, and he’ll bring that analog aesthetic (plus most of the equipment he used to make the album) to the floor at this fast-rising Tampa nightlife hub. (Hooch and Hive, Tampa) INFO
