Last summer, CL Tampa Bay spoke with bassist Erik Hempel, who’s one of the Bay area jazz scene’s brightest young bassists. On Friday, he takes a big risk and puts out an ambitious new album, Sport and Chaos, where Hempel jumps around genres (and even raps?) alongside a seven-piece backing band, plus eight guest artists, who’ll all hopefully show to help the album come to life at the relatively intimate Blue Note.
