✔️ Art & Soul w/Caleborate/Sierra Amora/Tommy Phenom/Joshua Cruz/DJ Wally Clark Left Lane Entertainment’s recurring Art & Soul series has always highlighted some of the best in hip-hop, soul and R&B, and on Thursday organizers are tapping an emcee from the other Bay area to liven things up in a huge way. Caleborate hails from Berkeley, California and isn’t cut from the same cloth other famous-because-of-the-internet rappers are. The 24-year-old says it himself on “Caught Up” from his 2017 album Real Person. “Realize that I don’t do this shit for retweets or dollars,” he raps. “I’m just a byproduct of the pain I keep inside of my mind is always racing, but they ain’t no fucking driver.” He also eschews fancy friends — and favors a slow-cooked approach to introspective hip-hop that warrants repeat listens — all in the hopes of making music that resonates well after the luster of web posts and Soundcloud comments wears off (“rap spam” is what Windy City alternative newspaper Chicago Reader calls it). So many people are always clamoring for the golden days of hip-hop. Well, one of rap’s undersung young artists is bringing it to St. Pete on Thursday. Rodney Carrington Blurring the line between a concert and stand-up comedy act, Rodney Carrington is back in Clearwater for his fifth appearance at Ruth Eckerd Hall, where he’ll give old fans some of the country music hits (“Drink More Beer,” “Show Them to Me” and “Put Your Clothes Back On”) while also showcasing a lot of the cowboy humor that’s earned him enough notoriety to have his own comedy special on Netflix (Here Comes The Truth, released last October). ✔️ David Bromberg Quintet He’s a session man who could sherpa any band around blues, folk, country, bluegrass or rock ‘n’ roll, and on Thursday he’ll bring his Quintet to downtown Clearwater in support of his latest, last year’s The Blues, The Whole Blues and Nothing But The Blues. The record was DownBeat magazine’s 2017 album of the year and covers — you guessed it — the blues with help from Grammy-winning producer Larry Campbell (Levon Helm, Bob Dylan), who helped Bromberg, 72, give new life to the healthy collection of originals and genre standards. Expect to recognize it when Robert Johnson, Bobby Charles, George “Little Hat” Jones, Ray Charles, and Sonny Boy Williamson songs get played, but don’t be surprised if Bromberg & Co. switch up the arrangements, too. Spring Beer Jam Kickoff w/The Heavy Pets/Ike Stubblefield/Joe Marcinek Spring Beer Jam is kind of like a sequel to Tampa Bay Beer Week for those who didn’t get enough earlier this month. Dunedin Brewery is making sure the festivities are properly soundtracked with four nights of music, and it all kicks off on Thursday with Florida jam-rock favorites The Heavy Pets.
