✔️  Miles Electric Band Vince Wilburn, Jr., nephew and frequent sideman to iconic trumpeter Miles Davis, brings this ensemble to embrace Davis’s improvisational spirit while still giving fans a slice of the sounds that made the jazz genius and Prince of Darkness a legend. “We have an edge,” Wilburn Jr. told CL in a recent interview. “The core of the band actually played with Miles. We have a way of interpreting the music live. We know how to keep true to the music but put a spin on it.” Read the rest of the chat here. (Capitol Theatre, Clearwater) INFO

✔️  J.I.D. w/Earthgang J. Cole protege Destin Route — aka J.I.D. — checks into Orpheum to see how tracks from a new album (The Never Story, released on Interscope Records under the umbrella of Cole’s Dreamville Records imprint) hit with Ybor City fans who’ve grown accustomed to seeing their fair share of up-and-coming rappers and singers at this 7th Avenue nightclub. Under the Covers w/Control This/Terrapin/Abortion Twins/Out Come The Wolves/Knee Deep/Long Lost Enemies One of the only on-again, off-again cover band events worth going to is, well, back on this weekend when Fubar hosts two nights of ‘80s and ‘90s tribute sets staged by bands like Control This (covering the Specials), Abortion Twins (R.E.M.) and Knee Deep (CKY). No cover, plus the chance to sing along to some of your favorite songs like an idiot sounds like a plan to us. (Fubar, St. Petersburg) INFO

✔️  Hiphopalooza 5 w/Queen of Ex/Gat$/Deezy Wee The Reaper/Audio Artwork/Same E Hues/Lil Yo$hi/Ex Nihlo/Tyrell Golden/Tony Handz/more The only way to truly appreciate the value of a scene is to be as embedded into it as humanly possible. Tampa emcee Prince Golden epitomizes “scene supporter,” and we’re thrilled that his celebration of Bay area hip-hop, Hiphopalooza 5, has reached the half-decade mark. Close to two dozen acts are scheduled, and QueenofEx — with a fiery delivery and ridiculous live band — rightfully has her name sitting boldly on top of the bill. (Crowbar, Ybor City) INFO

97X Band Battle w/Kerry Courtney/WD-HAN/DBMK Generally, we’re against Battle of the Bands shows, but to each their own, right? Plus, this one actually features a critic’s favorite — American Idol alum and Goodnight, Neverland frontman Kerry Courtney (who is branching out with a new band these days) — duking it out with Best of the Bay Reader’s Pick for Best Local Band, WD-HAN (“We Don’t Have A Name”), which is releasing an album at this show. Another promising duo, DBMK (“Denim Blue Music”), rounds out the competition. The winner moves on to the next round in Bay area radio station 97X’s search for a local band to open its Next Big Thing Festival next month, and you might hurt your next looking up at the overhead shipping container stage at this Channelside party bar. ✔️ Et Cultura Interactive Music + Art + Film Festival w/Son Volt/The Hip Abduction/TRC/Queen of Ex/William Tyler/Cloud Nothings/Waxahatchee/Slowdive/The Budos Band/more The music portion of Et Cultura technically kicked off last night with a Jannus Live set from St. Pete songwriter Kristopher James, but things really start to get charged up tonight when Jay Farrar’s post-Uncle Tupelo Americana project Son Volt brings its special blend of roots country and indie rock to headline State Theatre after an undersung yet very distinctive young voice of Nashville — William Tyler —brings one of 2016’s best albums (Modern Country) to open the show. Thursday-night activities at Jannus include a set from world music local boys done good (The Hip Abduction, playing Jannus), an old-school CL fave at Ringside Café (hip-hop collective TRC) and more, while the rest of the weekend features midwestern lo-fi rock darlings Cloud Nothings, shoegaze vets Slowdive, Katie Crutchfield-fronted Waxahatchee, Daptone Records darlings The Budos Band, NYC rapper Talib Kweli and more than a dozen other local and international acts. More information is available via etcultura.com. (Various venues, downtown St. Petersburg) INFO
