✔️ Stranger in Paradise or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love el Son Cuban-born Beatriz Monteavaro — best known in hardcore circles as drummer for heavy Miami band Holly Hunt — will be mapping the musical journey which reignited her love of music from her home country. Equally inspired by new wave (Bow Wow Wow, Adam and the Ants’ use of a Burundi drum sound), Nigerian Beats and pre-revolutionary mambo and son, Monteavaro will stage this installation at Seminole Height’s Cuntshaus space, where Permanent Makeup and Piss Ghost drummer Susan Dickson-Nadeau will take the stage, too. Fangsgiving w/Have Gun, Will Travel/Will Quinlan/TRC/Shae Krispinsky/Same Day Delivery Orchestra/Band of Sorrows/Radarmen/Hangtown/Scott Harrell/John Nowicki/Eliana Blanchard/Bob FriersonBeastie Boys, Black Sabbath, The Cars, A Tribe Called Quest, Mazzy Star and Queen are just some of the classic acts that’ll be covered by an array of Bay area acts at this two-stage show that is a benefit for the nonprofit Gasparilla Music Foundation, which helps provide musical instruments for some of the area’s neediest kids. Yes, you may wear a costume. (Crowbar, Ybor City) INFO
✔️ Behemoth w/At The Gates/Wolves In The Throne Room Holy, heavy hell, Batman. An international duo of heavy metal bands — Polish black death outfit Behemoth and Portuguese thrash and groove metal band At The Gates — will join one of the U.S.’ finest metal groups, Wolves In The Throne Room, for a show that could very well open up a literal portal to hell underneath the Jannus courtyard. ✔️ Max Weinberg’s Jukebox He’s spent over four decades in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and was Conan O’Brien’s musical sideman for almost 20 years, but Max Weinberg will take an evening to ask audience members to interact with a video board that’ll help create a setlist that he and his four-piece will play at this show, which is his Capitol Theatre debut. (Capitol Theatre, Clearwater) INFO
Jóse López A versatile pianist and enthusiastic performer of chamber music, José López was a founding member of the Dalbergi Trio, has collaborated with Florida International University’s resident new music ensemble, the Nodus Ensemble, and was the orchestral pianist with the Florida Philharmonic for 13 years. On Saturday afternoon he works through compositions by Franz Schubert, Franz Liszt and operatic transcriptions and works by Nicolás Ruíz Espadero. (Sykes Chapel at University of Tampa, Tampa) INFO
Mija Here’s a pretty cool booking that finds Skrillex collaborator and fast-rising Arizona producer Mija headlining The Attic at Rock Brothers, which is quickly becoming another trusty venue for electronic music producers. Her latest — a remix of Nick Monaco’s “River” — features big disco energy, but her live sets have long defied genrefication in favor of whatever vibe she feels serves the room she’s spinning for on any given night. (The Attic at Rock Brothers Brewing, Ybor City) INFO
✔️ J Balvin There are mixed attitudes about Latino culture these days, and J. Balvin knows that. In 2015, he pulled out of a Miss USA broadcast to protest disrespectful comments about Latinos by contest owner Donald Trump. Good news for people like Trump is that Balvin’s music has been all over the place this summer. “Positivo” — the 33-year-old Colombian’s song with Michael Brun — was Telemundo’s 2018 Deportes World Cup song, and Balvin’s new album of warm Latin pop, Vibras, is bringing him to arenas across the country. This tour may be the last time you see Balvin — who spent his summer sparring with Drake on the Billboardpop charts — in a 10,000-capacity room.
