Tomorrow, April 7, marks the first anniversary of John Prine’s death from COVID-19. His passing set off a chain of sorrow in the Bay area, which had adopted the Nashville songwriter—and longtime Gulfport resident—as one of its own.

To celebrate the life of a voice who changed the lives of so many with his working class contributions to songwriting, a host of Tampa Bay’s best songsmiths—including Kip Kelly, JT Brown, Adam Randall, Patrick Hagerman, Jack Sprouse, Crooked Thumb Brewery resident Joshua Reilly and others—will be in Safety Harbor for a tribute show.

Happening at Crooked Thumb—located at 555 10th Ave. S in Safety Harbor—the tribute will be accompanied by the release of a “Bruised Orange” gold ale named for Prine’s fifth album.

Although initially billed as a songwriter circle where songs could be performed by all comers, Reilly told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay on Monday that all slots have filled up.

The show starts at 7 p.m. and goes until 10 p.m. More information and COVID-19 protocols are available on social media.
