The end of the week has arrived — you made it! Celebrate with some live music. Here's a breakdown of what's happening on this Fri., July 22, plus a peek at the weekend ahead…
Pompeya with Panamory, Ari Chi Moscow-brewed Pompeya brings together ‘70s disco grooves, ‘80s New Wave dance unz and ‘90s indie pop glow into that breezy, funky, vaguely psychedelic sound that has becoming so ubiquitous these days. Despite hailing from Russia, the band records and performs their music in English; this is the next round of dates behind sophomore outing, Real. RIYL: Tame Impala, you’re likely to enjoy Pompeya’s musically creative sound. (Green Bench Brewing, St. Petersburg) –Michael Fritz & Leilani Polk
Butch Trucks & Freight Train with The Ries Brothers Allman Brothers Band famously utilized two drummers with distinctive styles to make their dynamic rhythmic sound. While "Jaimoe" Johanson delivered the Allmans’ jazzier signatures, Butch Trucks laid down the more conventional tempos, sort of serving as the music’s heartbeat. Allman Brother guitarist Dickey Betts famously referred to Trucks as having “that freight train, meat-and-potatoes kind of thing that set Jaimoe up perfectly. He had the power thing we needed.” (I think Trucks missed out on an opportunity to name his solo project “Butch Trucks & The Meat and Potatoes.”) Check out Gabe's Q&A with Trucks here, and our story on The Ries Brothers here. Lil Dicky Relatable, bravado-free rhyme-slinging purveyor of wit Lil Dicky has white suburban swagger, crowd-funded a debut studio LP last year, Professional Rapper, that featured guest spots by Snoop Dogg, T-Pain, Brendon Urie (Panic! at the Disco), Rich Homie Quan and Fetty Wap among others, and is brought to a party in SoHo by 93.3 FLZ-FM likely due to his track with the latter two, “Save Dat Money," that’s currently piping on the airwaves. Heist and Jamie Ferreira support. Open bar from 9 to 10 p.m. for ticket holders but get yours fast; this is a likely sell-out. (The DrYnk SoHo, Tampa) –LP
King Lil G A Mexican-American rapper from South Central L.A. whose hip hop draws from a mix of Chicano and gangsta rap styles, and subject matter draws from his bleak experiences and glamour-free life on the street. King Lil G also leads his own Sucio (Spanish for “dirty”) Movement, which he’s said “has to do with freedom and not being afraid to accomplish and do things… it’s empowerment for those that don’t think they can make it and come from nothing.” He’s doing something right, if his 516k Facebook likes are any indication. Up the Ante Summer Concert Series: Jensen Serf Company, DRUG, The Mermers, Gino and the Goons An abundance of bands with a peculiar lo-fi surf rock-meets-psychedelic/acid noise quality have been bubbling up from St. Pete, an organic Floridian sound that captures some of the punk and hardcore history of the Sunshine State’s musical legacy. Jensen Surf Co. has a name evocative of that sound and in many ways, best exemplifies it in practice as well with their screaming guitars, pounding near-hollow percussion and remote vocals. DRUG, from Tampa, builds on a variety of lo-fi styles with tremolo-heavy guitar work and brisk intensity. The Mermers ply traditional surf rock with eerie gothic tonalities. And don’t let Gino and the Goons’ name fool you; the group makes power pop with hints of vintage proto-punk that should resonate deeply with anyone who likes warm sounds with cool, hard, gritty textures and choruses.
