It’s Saturday, woo hoo! Here’s some concerts happening on this 23rd day of January.
The Hot Sardines The hot jazz ensemble from NYC is creatively driven by Fats Waller-influenced stride-piano virtuoso Evan “Bibs” Palazzo and Parisian-born writer/silky sultry vocalist “Miz Elizabeth” Bougerol, whose repertoire takes classic tunes from the Prohibition through WWII eras and re-tools them into modern pop standards for today. The infectious, classy and overall lush arrangements are bolstered by a tight rhythm section, lively brass, and added percussion via tap dancing member “Fast Eddy” Francisco. Whiskey, Wheels & Women with The Punknecks, The Hooten Hallers, Russ T. Nutz, Hillbilly Harlots A bike and chopper party with raucous merriment and rounds of shot-taking fueled by four ass-kicking rock acts: Missouri trio The Hooten Hallers, plying a Tom Waits-evocative blues and soul-tumbled brand of rock brightened with bass and baritone saxes; North Carolina-brewed purveyor of “country/western rawnchy tonk,” Russ T. Nutz; and a couple of Nashville outfits in The Punknecks, bringing tattoos, ‘tude and twang marked by the entwining vocal harmonies of snarly croaking Jason and clear dulcet drawling wife Polly, and roots-pop duo Hillbilly Harlots, featuring Polly with fiddle-playing counterpart Lauren Morris. (Local 662, St. Petersburg)
Brutality Album Release Party with Murder Suicide, Graverot, Koroidia Local long-running death metal band Brutality stages a release party for Sea of Ignorance, their first full length since re-forming in 2012 and hearkening back to the vicious, slam-heavy feel of Tampa’s early metal days, when Brutality was first conceived.
