Mavis Staples with Joan Osborne She began her musical tenure in The Staples Singers but Mavis Staples been releasing solo soul, R&B and gospel-hued material since 1969 and has managed to remain relevant without spending too much time on the charts, though 2013 LP One True Vine (her second produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy) marked her Billboard 200 peak at No. 67. On her current tour, Staples is joined by roots and blues pop songstress Joan Osborne, who enjoyed her come up with the faith-reflective “One of Us” and is currently celebrating the 20-year anniversary of the breakthrough album that spawned it, Relish. (Capitol Theatre, Clearwater)

George Winston A venerable pianist who’d been flexing his musical chops in jazz, blues, folk and New Age realms for more than four decades, George Winston is also a philanthropist who’s been raising funds for nonprofit organizations since 1986, holding canned food drives and donating all proceeds from merch sales to select organizations in every tour market. The songs on his forthcoming Spring Carousel – A Cancer Research Benefit album were composed while he recovered from a bone marrow transplant, and 100 percent of its royalties will benefit cancer research. He’ll includes a few cuts off the album in his “Winter Show,” which also touches on fall and winter-hued material, a few Vince Guaraldi’s Peanuts tunes, and works inspired by New Orleans and stride piano traditions. Ethan Parker Band The Tampa area-based folk-island outfit returns to town after a 40-city tour, and throws a charity concert to celebrate their homecoming while raising funds for Project Primavera, an organization geared at helping orphans and at-risk youths. Also performing on this night: Juniper indie rock outfit The Helmsmen, Nashville pop artist Kirsten Arian, and Orlando singer-songwriter Cameron Moreau. Admission is free but donations are appreciated. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa)
