Lots happening this Saturdy and Sunday, Feb. 28 and March 1. A nice convenient breakdown for you below…
Pink It Up 6!: Ska Bands & Fans Against Breast Cancer with UNRB, Johnny Cakes & The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypso, Victims Of Circumstance, Broseph Skalin, Saganaki Bomb Squad, Fire Swamp Terrors The sixth annual edition of the skanky breast cancer awareness and charity event finds the usual crème de la crème of the ska scene gathering together under one bill; proceeds from the evening’s festivities go to the Morton Plant Mease Foundation: Mammography Voucher Program (MVP), Cancer Support Services (CaPSS) and the Susan Cheek Needler Breast Center at Morton Plant Mease Hospital. (Market on 7th, Ybor City)
Ferry Corsten with Mondo, Basomatik The prized Dutch producer is among EDM’s current leaders, his infectiously melodic sound seeping into both ambient trance and electro-house sonic realms. Corsten just launched a new EP release series via his own Flashover Recordings, and the first outing, Hello World EP Part 1, dropped February 23. (Amphitheatre, Ybor City)
Florida Strawberry Festival: Kevin Costner & Modern West The official head-scratcher at this year’s Strawberry Festival is none other than one Mr. Kevin Costner, who takes a break from his regular gig as high paid actor in favor of playing gee-tar and singing sweetly darwling serenades with his country-rock eight-piece, Modern West. (Festival Grounds, Plant City)
Sammy Kay with Dan Padilla & guests He’s done stints with well-regarded ska groups like The Slackers, The Skatalites and King Django among others. Currently, New Jersey musician Sammy Kay leads his own merry group solo, mashing the sounds of ska, soul, reggae and rocksteady into his own bright, brass-splashed brew. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)
Rockabilly Ruckus with Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys, Rocket 88, Ted Stevens & the Doo-Shots, The Intoxicators, Slip & the Spinouts, The Sara Rose Band You know the sound – vintage rock n’ roll dosed in soaked in plenty of surf n’ twang. You know the community-funded radio station bringing a big group of bands that make those sounds to the Skipperdome – WMNF. This is the 12th annual edition of Rockabilly Ruckus, which finds California western swing/country boogie ensemble Big Sand & His Fly Rite Boys headlining, and a diverse grouping of other genre-specific acts filling out the rest of the bill. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa)SUNDAY, MARCH 1
The Paul Collins Beat ‘The Beat’ has sonic roots grounded in the sounds of Paul Collins’ former band, The Nerves (“Hangin’ on the Telephone”) and is not in any way associated with the ska-toned English Beat. The power pop rocker originally formed his Beat in the late ’70s and has been active with it, off and on, for more than three decades, from 1981 debut The Kids are the Same through 2014’s Feel the Noise with his current six-piece. This date supports and due to the size of the venue and stature of the artist, we can guarantee a sell-out. (New World Brewery, Ybor City) –Adam Hardy and Leilani Polk
Shpongle with Phutureprimitive If you were sitting on a tab of acid, a Shpongle show is likely the best motivatation to drop a dose and get cross-eyed. The British electronic project of Simon Posford (aka Hallucinogen) principal purveyors of psybient music, Shpongle crafts a most bizarre, tribal-textured mix of world, psychedelic trance and ambient sounds, with compositions heavily influenced by his own consciousness expansion and meant to deliver an aural experience approximating the same hallucinatory states. Add eye-popping visuals to the live equation and you have yourself one intense Sunday night outing. (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)
An Evening with Leo Kottke With a quirky booming baritone and legendary finger-picking acoustic guitar chops that include the ability to execute syncopated, polyphonic melodies, Georgia old hand Leo Kottke has influenced many aspiring instrumentalists, especially considering his comeback from debilitating tendonitis and nerve damage, which didn’t stop him but did force him to amend his playing and build upon his folk-blues style with jazz and classical techniques. He’s also a great storyteller and even when performing all by himself, knows how to capture a crowd and hold it. The Palladium should prove an ideal venue to showcase his talents. (Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg)
Tampa Jazz Club Presents: The Dave Stryker Quintet Readers of Downbeat Magazine named the latest outing from Dave Stryker, 8-Track – which includes re-imaginings of ’70s-era songs like Jackson 5’s “Never Can Say Goodbye” – as one of 2014’s best, and the esteemed jazz musician also made Downbeat’s list of Top Guitarists for the seventh time. Not surprising; dude’s real prolific, with 25 albums to his credit. For this afternoon presentation, he’s joined by players all associated with the USF Jazz Studies program: Jack Wilkins (tenor sax), Chris Rottmayer (keys), Mark Neuenschwander (bass) and Ric Craig (drums). (Mainstage Theatre @ HCC Ybor, Ybor City)
