THURSDAY, APRIL 29

Alexisonfire [pictured right] w/Trash Talk/Therefore I Am/La Dispute Post-hardcore fivesome Alexisonfire tastefully incorporates elements of melodic hardcore, prog, punk and screamo into their high-octane music. The award-winning Canadian favorites are in the midst of a U.S. headlining tour to promote their 2009 album, Old Crows/Young Cardinals, which debuted at No. 2 on the Soundscan Top 200 in Canada and No. 81 on the Billboard 200 as well as garnering some pretty good press (AbsolutePunk.net called it “the album we’ve been waiting for the Ontario quintet to write their entire careers.”) 6:30 p.m. doors, State Theatre, St. Petersburg, $16 (all ages).

Cornmeal w/Pickford Sundries Chicago five-piece Cornmeal – made up of drums, guitar, banjo, upright bass and fiddle – plays a fast-dashing and furiously fun style of progressive electro-acoustic bluegrass marked by rich three-part vocal harmonies and Americana, folk and jammy roots rock tendencies. This past March, Cornmeal released Live in Chicago, IL Vol. I, an album that captures the contagious energy the band delivers in a live setting while showcasing their talents and ability to improvise, like in the 14-minute scorcher, “When the World’s Got You Down,” an uplifting propulsive number with fiery guitar and fiddle solos, the two instruments vying for ultimate sonic supremacy in an extended stretch of refreshingly intense jamming. 7 p.m. doors, Orpheum, Ybor City, $8.

Janis Ian An intimate evening of calm and lovely folk melodies by the iconic, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter best known for her 1975 hit, “At Seventeen.” Ian plays two concerts — one at 7 p.m., one at 9:30 p.m., Craftsmen House, St. Petersburg, $32 per show.
