✔️ Donovan Donovan picked a heavy season to come to town. The 70-year-old folk icon arrives in Clearwater during the opening waves of a fall/winter concert season that will see other 1960’s heavyweights like Brian Wilson (performing Pet Sounds) and Van Morrison (who sold out all three of his January 2017 dates) coming to the area. CL isn’t worried about the singing Scot though since he arrives to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Sunshine Superman, his 1966 album which brought in the beginning of folk music’s psychedelic-era. The 42-minute effort might as well be fine art, too with all of its abstract lyricism and long form arrangements buoyed by chamber quartets. Donovan is a rock hall of famer, so expect him to pull no punches at this one. (Capitol Theatre, Clearwater) INFO
✔️ Baroness w/Pallbearer Last winter, Baroness released their Purple LP, where Mercury Rev’s Dave Fridmann (who also worked with The Flaming Lips) took the wheel and helped the Savannah, Georgia metal band turn in what critics are calling their “masterpiece.” This show with Pallbearer celebrates that release and comes with a bonus. Baroness frontman John Baizley, who is also a painter, will be across the street at Daddy Kool Records for a pop up shop from 4-6 p.m. featuring art from his creative project A Perfect Monster. WMNF Birthday w/Matt Burke Tampa Bay’s favorite (read: only) 37-year-old community radio station is celebrating another trip around the sun by inviting their supporters to take a long lunch, have a cocktail, and nosh on a menu of chef Greg Baker’s fried chicken, meatloaf & cauliflower steak, ‘taters, mac and cheese, okra, and veggies. Biscuits, cornbread, and cake will be on hand for the carb-fiends and music fans will be glad to know that Have Gun, Will Travel frontman Matt Burke has been named designated crooner for the afternoon event where we hope to hear some stripped down versions of cuts from his band’s most recent album, Science From an Easy Chair.
