Slavery was announced as abolished in Texas 152 years ago. Yes, Abe Lincoln's emancipation happened two years earlier, but you know, shit takes time. In recognition of what's generally regarded as the emancipation of African-American slaves in the Confederate South, the world has a Juneteenth celebration on June 19.
Community radio station WMNF 88.5 FM does its part today by devoting all of today's air time to African American programming. Regular hosts will be joined by African-American guest hosts and the station is opening its doors to guests for an open house, party and potluck meal.
The station will also be screening a documentary, 13th, because, well, there are many forms of slavery and systematic racism that still exist today.
This isn't necessarily a live music event, but it is a good opportunity to get out of the house, meet your neighbors and feel more connected to the place you call home.
Potluck starts at 6 p.m., and the film begins at 7 p.m. Additional details are available via wmnf.org.
