Today in rock history: on this date in 1969, the debut album by The Jackson 5, Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5 was released. The young singing group of brothers from Gary, Indiana secured a recording contract with Motown Records and Supremes singer Diana Ross introduced them to the world via concert performances and television appearances. The album featured the hit single “I Want You Back” which became a No. 1 hit on Billboard’s pop chart and went on to sell 5 million copies. The album too was a hit; it reached No. 5 on the pop chart and held the No. 1 spot on the R&B chart for nine weeks. The group would go on to achieve many more hits singles and albums and lead singer and youngest brother, Michael, would go on to become one of the best-selling pop artists of all time.

Today in rock history: on this date in 1982, Daryl Hall and John Oates eclipsed The Everly Brothers to become the most successful duo in pop music history when they scored their fifth No. 1 hit single. “Maneater,” the pair’s best-selling single of all time, stayed at the top of the charts for five consecutive weeks and served as the lead single from the band’s multi-platinum selling album H2O which also featured the top 10 hits, “Family Man” and “One on One.” The long-standing duo has achieved six No. 1 hits throughout its 45-plus year career and has sold over 40 million records worldwide.

Today in rock history: on this date in 1943, Keith Richards was born in Dartford, Kent, England, United Kingdom. As a founding member of The Rolling Stones, Richards has served in the capacity of rhythm guitarist and lead guitarist, co-songwriter and occasional lead singer with the band since its formation in 1962. With 30 studio albums and 120 singles released, Richards has helped make The Rolling Stones become of the longest lasting and most successful rock and roll bands of all time. Although Keith Richards celebrates his 74th birthday today, he and the Stones are still going strong and just recently completed another successful world tour.

Today in rock history: on this date in 1972, filming began on the Sam Peckinpah-directed western film, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Cast in the film alongside James Coburn and musician/actor Kris Kristofferson was singer/songwriter Bob Dylan who made his film debut in this film. Dylan landed the small part of a character named Alias but, more significantly, he composed the score and the soundtrack for the film which brought him his 12th studio album. The soundtrack album and the film are best remembered for including one of Dylan’s best-known and enduring songs, “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” which reached No. 12 on Billboard’s pop singles chart and has been covered by a variety of artists including Eric Clapton and Guns N’ Roses.
