A few shows happening this Thurs., June 11.
Beta Play with The Tragic Thrills The California band formerly known as Tommy & The High Pilots, currently known as Beta Play, singer-guitarist Tommy Cantillon opting to drop his handle from the name and assume a new one to match the quartet’s attitude and stylistic shift from alt rock with dusty roots and pop jangle to more electro-infused grooves and sweeping arena-ready fare. Fellow Santa Barbara band The Tragic Thrills have also added synths and airy spaciousness to their folk-reared pop-rock sounds. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)
Three Cents Short with Sketchie, Mind The Canvas, Clem Mcgillicutty & The Burnouts, Unchecked Aggression The self-styled “Grand Rapids party ska” of DIY three-piece Three Cents Short is feel-good fresh with guitars that jump between pop melodic and crunchy distorted, bouncing basslines and the sort of gruff spouting lead vocals you’d expect to hear in a ska-punk band, though you wouldn’t expect such finely flung backing harmonies amid the rah-rah choruses. Amid the regional support on this unbridled Thursday night bill is skate punk-galloping Sketchie, from Sarasota, and Sebring’s Clem Mcgillicutty & The Burnouts, adding some crusty cracker country folk-punk to the equation.
