A nice looking Friday night in live music on this 16th day of October. Check out the breakdown below, then peep what's coming up this weekend, too.
Polyenso with RedFeather The long-awaited follow-up to Polyenso’s 2013 album One Big Particular Loop won’t be coming out this year as originally planned – the date’s been pushed back to sometime in 2016 – however, to whet the appetites of their diehard fans, the St. Pete ensemble with a serene experimental rock quality has dropped three tracks that are currently available on Spotify, including “Osaka Son,” which soars in gentle waves of warm synth tones and first premiered on Consequence of Sound, and “Moona Festival,” its pristine vocal melodies ascending over mournful piano, down-tempo beats, and stuttering and shimmering electronics. These along with the urgent ambient “17 New Years” and new track “Not My Real Life” have been assembled for EP 1, out today and celebrated at this album release show. (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)
TFO Rock: The Music of Led Zeppelin A rock band fronted by vocalist Randy Jackson gets lush, live symphonic backing by The Florida Orchestra in a program that touches on backed by TFO in “Stairway to Heaven,” “Kashmir,” “All of My Love,” “Black Dog” and other classics from the Zeppelin catalog. (Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg)
Iration with The Green, The Movement Cali-bred alt reggae group Iration doses their swaying sounds in dub and rock, adds healthy measures of sunshine grooviness, and spreads to fans around the U.S., of which there is a particularly sizeable base right here in St. Pete. Likely the motivation behind Iration’s two-night (Friday-Saturday) stand here behind freshly released fourth full-length, Hotting Up, which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Reggae charts. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg)
Philip Donnelly The Irish guitarist has played sideman to a rash of venerable musicians; Johnny Cash, The Everly Brothers, Crystal Gayle (with whom he co-wrote the hit “Living in These Troubled Times”), John Prine, Donovan, Emmylou Harris and Townes Van Zandt, among many others, and his chops extends through country, folk, rock, and even Celtic music. Donnelly is also a rather prolific solo artist and put out two albums since last November: Beyond the Pale, a folk rock record that includes duets with Prine and Gayle; and Dreaming the Blues, his first true blues outing with two of his old Donovan bandmates, bassist Joe Sef and drummer Stewart Lawrence. (Hideaway Café & Recording Studio, St. Petersburg)
Romain Collin with The Nate Najar Trio NYC-by-way-of-France jazz pianist Romain Collin was Berklee College-educated, then upped his prestige a notch by earning a full scholarship to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and studying with the likes of Wynton Marsalis and Ron Carter. He’s recorded with artists ranging from Christian McBride to John McLaughlin, created an eight-piece suite of autobiographical compositions, wrote some music for films, then finally released his own full-length Press Enter this year, which unites his traditional and modern jazz influences with elements of European classical music and film scoring to arrive at a rather textured and compelling sound. (Largo Cultural Center, Largo)
Xaemora with Scytherium, Culltellarii, Nervochaos, Lacerate, Unsung Destroyer If you couldn’t tell by all the serpentine vaguely ominous band names that you may or may not be able to pronounce, this is a bill of black metal as led by Missouri-spawned Xaemora ("Zye-MOR-ah"), which finds musicians Dreathus, Härtvaig, VonEckhardt, Vlitir Sarnat and Deyanira plying dark, extreme devastation with melodic despondent undertones. (Brass Mug, Tampa)
