Run The Jewels w/Nick Hook/Gangsta Boo/Cuz (Sold Out) For Christmas last year, Killer Mike and “uncle” EL-P flipped the music world on its ass by surprising releasing their much anticipated Run the Jewels 3 album weeks before it was due. The 51 minute effort doesn’t hold back on the social commentary they pair have built over the course of two albums, but don’t be surprised if the duo don’t come with gloom and doom at this Jannus Live appearance. “I don’t have a sense of dread, to be honest,” Killer Mike recently told NPR. “And older black people I talk to don’t have sense of dread…What I have is a sense of what’s next. And what can we do to take care of ourselves.”
Do expect the set to be lit, however. Their 2015 set at the now defunct Big Guava festival was a highlight of the year, and they’ve said that they wanted shows supporting RTJ 3 to speak to the turmoil living on the LP’s 14 fiery tracks.
“We unfolded a narrative in this one that we knew was important to get right,” EL-P said in the same interview. “We wanted to make it an anatomy of a riot.” Breaking New York City producer Nick Hook is a late addition to this bill, and he brings his excellent debut full length Relationships (which features cameos by Hudson Mohawke, Novelist, Junglepussy and even the Deftones’ Chino Moreno) to the party. Don Henley w/JD & the Straight Shot (Sold Out) As if the pain of multiple sold out Van Morrison shows wasn’t enough, fucking Don Henley had to go and sell out his show, too. The Grammy winning member of the Eagles will air his “Dirty Laundry” at this show and pay homage to the “Boys of Summer,” too. You just won’t be there to see it happen if you don’t already have a ticket. (Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater) INFO
