This Fri., April 24 is It's a jam-packed with plenty of live music happenings in addition to the evening screening of The Wrecking Crew. Breakdown below.
Monophonics with Ketchy Shuby The last time they hit town, the San Francisco ensemble that doles out healthy servings of dramatic, cinematic psychedelic soul, gritty howling blues and ass-shaking funk opened for Galactic. This tour around, Monophonics headlines behind a fresh LP of heavy, horn-blasted grooves: Sound of Sinning. These guys kill it live; in fact, I loved their 2012 show at New World so much, I gave it a Best of the Bay award. Definitely a must-see. (Crowbar, Ybor City) –Leilani Polk
Awkward Age, New Strange, Radarmen Last fall, Awkward Age won Creative Loafing’s Best of the Bay props for their self-titled EP. Then the Tampa trio released a debut full-length back in September. We Could Be Anywhere expends the same pop-punk energy of the EP across all 11 tracks. New Strange bring us slightly more lo-fi punk rock all the way from Cincinnati. And don’t forget the aluminum foil, as spacey indie rockers Radarmen are known to indoctrinate “with mind-controlling radar waves.” (Microgroove, Tampa) –Adam Hardy
Private Series 03: Dave Angel with Brian Busto, Glen S The next installment of Brian Busto’s exclusive (only 150 admitted) Private Series brings a force in techno to the HPC decks: revered London DJ/producer Dave Angel, active since the ‘80s and known for delving into deep, dark, acid-washed Detroit-styled techno realms dosed healthily in soul and hip house flavors. (Hyde Park Café, Tampa)–LP
Blast! Friday with Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes Though his collar might be a darker shade of blue than fellow New Jersey sound pioneer Bruce Springsteen, and his working man’s blend of blues, R&B and blue-eyed soul earned him more underground acclaim than blown-out levels of fame, harmonica-blowing husky-howling songsmith Southside Johnny has managed to come out on top with his longtime band, the Asbury Jukes, which includes a three-piece horn section in addition to longtime collaborator/musical director Jeff Kazee (Hammond B3, piano), guitarist Glenn Alexander, bassist John Conte and drummer Tom Seguso. They’ve been going at it since the mid-1970s, and are currently working on material for a 13th full-length that’s due out sometime later this year. (Cleveland Street, downtown Clearwater) –LP98Rockfest with Five Finger Death Punch, Rise Against, Breaking Benjamin, The Pretty Reckless, Nothing More, Young Guns 98Rock celebrates its 25th anniversary in style with its annual arena-size throwdown featuring some of the most well-played acts on the rock station. Headlining this year’s edition is Las Vegas metal outfit Five Finger Death Punch, which rose to fame with a cover of “Bad Company” and dropped back-to-back fourth and fifth LP, The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Vols. I & II, in 2013. The titular single is a powerful hard rock ballad about the struggle veterans often face when they return home. Also of note: frenetic, chaotic, and politically-charged Chicago punk rockers Rise Against; The Pretty Reckless, lead singer Taylor Momsen possessing a lyrical maturity and commanding stage presence that belies her youthful years, and whose glam rock voice is absolutely hypnotizing; and UK outfit Young Guns, their anthemic collision of synths and guitar winning them praises on both sides of the Atlantic. (Amalie Arena, Tampa) –Seth Peterson
Velvet Acid Christ The Denver outfit has been producing dark, loud, sinister electro-industrial music built on synths, drum machine sequencers and effected guitars, with whispered/growled vocals and a Terminator (the ’84 original) appeal, since 1990; latest album Subconscious Landscapes dropped last year. (Orpheum, Ybor City)–LP
