Take a look at some shows happening this Fri., Aug. 14. A peek at more live music coming up this weekend also included.

The Mercury Program with Auto!Automatic!!, Red Room Cinema The local scene always starts buzzing when The Mercury Program schedules a date in Tampa Bay. The Gainesville quartet has always held a venerated position in the Florida music scene, and it’s no different here at their ostensible home away from home, where their groove-driven post-rock instrumentals are soaked up and appreciated with much ardor. Two super high quality acts in a similar sonic vein – the more mathy, technically inclined Auto!Automatic!! and emotive vocals-included Red Room Cinema, which is in the midst of finishing a new LP – also perform on this night. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)

Sublime With Rome with Rebelution, Pepper, Mickey Avalon You know ‘em, and maybe you dig the new incarnation of the Long Beach, Cali. ska-punk outfit as led by young upstart vocalist/guitarist Rome Ramirez, who’s been at the helm since the remaining members returned to active status sans late Bradley Nowell in 2010. Bassist Eric Wilson is the only original member now (drummer Bud Gaugh dropped out in 2011), but Jon Freese (the Vandals, Devo, Weezer) has served as a suitable live replacement to help with the tour behind the second album in the Sublime With Rome formation – Sirens, which was released in July. If you’re like me, you prefer the unadulterated Sublime; everything else is just a poor imitation. At least Pepper and Mickey Avalon add some value to this bill, with the former likely drawing a big crowd of diehards with their reggae-dub sounds, and the latter bringing ballsy rap attitude and cheekiness to the evening’s sounds. (MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa)

Doug Deming and the Jeweltones Detroit guitarist/singer Doug Deming makes his rounds in Tampa Bay with his Jewltones (bass juggler Andrew Gohman and drummer Devin Neel), pushing out his shuffling mix of traditional blues, West Coast and Texas swing, country, roots and rockabilly on two separate nights – this Friday night showing in St. Pete, and again on Sunday afternoon at Ella’s Americana Folk Art Café. Both shows are free. (Ale and the Witch, St. Petersburg)

The Mad Violinist & The Symphony Crack Orchestra Atlanta-by-way-of-Tallahassee arranger/composer/producer Ashanti Floyd is the “Mad Violinist,” who’s reignited interest in the classical instrument by showcasing it in pop, hip hop, rock and electronic music settings, encouraging live instrumentals over all-digital productions in his work with artists like Lupe Fiasco (who brought Floyd on his “Lasers Tour”) and Nicki Minaj (who flew him out to LA, twice, to help her on her third LP), and creating his own blend of string-driven instrumentals that mix original material with re-imaginings. Read more about him and his Symphony Crack Orchestra here. (Crowbar, Ybor City)

Skull and Bone Band Reunion Show with Ragged Old Souls When Skull and Bone Band stopped playing a few years back, it proved an abrupt and unexpected blow to the jam scene, and while the members re-assembled as the more folk-roots oriented Ghost Country Revival, it lasted a mere five months until each went his or her separate ways and on to other projects. Vocalist Troy Youngblood, guitarist Roy Kelich (of Ragged Old Souls), bassist Chris Wood and drummer Mike "Mountain" Schuman have gotten the band back together, however, and are throwing a proper reunion/farewell show for the folks who missed the last one in May of 2013, bringing their crispy Southern-fried rock n’ roll sounds back to the stage for a single-night display, and adding the usual doses of soul and funk for good measure. Warming the stage on this special night is Ragged Old Souls warming the stage with funky, reggae-touched blues-licked rock led by the robust vocals of frontwoman “Soul Shaker.” (The Amsterdam, St. Petersburg)

Steve Arvey: Art of Blues, Journey Through the History of Blues Sarasota’s favorite bluesman – who sings in a pleasant drawling tenor and plays a wicked axe in addition to cigar box guitar – leads this distinctive Storytellers-style performance/musical travelogue, but instead of talking about himself, he and his band play songs that trace the history of blues, touching on the influence of piano, from its Delta and pre-war Chicago roots through the ‘70s and the rise of modern blues, R&B and soul. He’s learned from the best (JR.Wells and Hubert Sumlin were among his mentors), and touches on these fellas along with early legends like Homesick James and Honey Boy Edwards. (Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg)
