The live music breakdown for this Fri., Sept. 19

The Pretty Reckless Rock bands fronted by actors are hit-or-miss ventures. Jared Leto has transitioned from actor to rock star rather admirably and without giving up the occasional award-winning roles. So far, Gossip Girl alum Taylor Momsen doesn’t seem so interested in juggling two careers following the end of her CW show in 2012, instead focusing solely on frontwoman duties in her New York-based post-grungy and lightly glammy alt rock band The Pretty Reckless. It seems to have paid off in a big way with arena stomping, Mainstream and Alternative charts hit, “Heaven Knows” (“Oh, lord, heaven knows / We belong way down below”); 2014 sophomore album Going to Hell peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and has lent the low-toned blonde bombshell some musical cred. (Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg)

Bubonik Funk Bubbling up from Charlotte, N.C.’s grooving depths is this four-piece pushing a mix of rock, soul, reggae and as the name proclaims, a healthy dose of gritty thumping and zippy pumping funk. This tour supports a new EP, Oddfish Volume One, currently streaming at Relix.com. (Dunedin Brewery, Dunedin)

Barabbas, Zace, Logic Forbeatz, DJ Galaxz, ?Nowledge, The Real Clash It’s Friday; you ain’t got no job … and you ain’t got shit to do. Okay, maybe you’ve got a job, but if you don’t, it’s all good; admission to this local hip hop showcase is free, which means more Benjamins to put towards your beer tab. Among the talents on (musical) tap: SPC-spawned band-backed ensemble The Real Clash, Barabbas the MC (aka Marc Carrier), who mixes funky soulful golden era-style production with dark and modern lyrical slants, and ?nowledge, an emcee who flows conscious verses over bumpin’ sample-driven grooves. (Fubar, St. Petersburg)

High On Fire with Cosm, Meat Wound, Upon Graves High On Fire calls on the thick guitar and bass crunch of stoner  metal, amps up the rhythmic pounding pace and shredding riffs to breakneck speed, and roars throaty ferocious vocals over top. Though the 16-year-old Oakland, Calif. metal trio hasn’t delivered a new LP since 2012’s sci-fi conceptual De Vermis Mysteriis, High On Fire has issued several limited-edition 7” singles and has been working on material for a seventh LP amid steady touring that brings them to the Bay area on this night. (Orpheum, Ybor City)
