Tiempo Libre The boogie inside of you wants to listen to some Son Cubano, and fans of the nearly century old Afro-Cuban music are in for a good one when Grammy nominated Tiempo Libre bring their own style of Miami Latin jazz to the Straz Center where not one ass will stay obediently seated. Merchandise w/Chain of Flowers/Soapbox Soliloquy Be prepared to get nailed to a cross. Chain of Flowers are probably are among the most buzzworthy of UK exports to land on this side of the Florida-Georgia line, and for good reason. Their eponymous 2015 release is a BBC Radio and KEXP mainstay, and they’ve been compared to Ceremony, The Cure, Iceage and The Smiths. Joining the boys from Cardiff at this one are Tampa’s own Merchandise and St. Pete’s Soapbox Soliloquy. (Paper Crane, St. Petersburg) INFO
Stranger Things 2 80s Costume & Dance Party w/DJ Boomerang/Shadowrun Brothers The world now has an arrival date for the next season of Stranger Things, so fans of the Netflix sensation should gear up for another party at St. Pete swanky dive The Bends. In his review of the first Stranger Things party, CL contributor Riley Huff described a darkwave party where hospital gowns and blond wigs made their way around a Christmas light illuminated room that only got trippier as custom cocktails (“The Upside Down,” “Demogorgan”) rushed booze to the bloodstreams of all in attendance. (The Bends, St. Petersburg) INFO
Kevin Griffin Better Then Ezra came out of the era that gave the world Matchbox Twenty and Goo Goo Dolls (the latter of whom are playing on March 11). Don’t hold that against Kevin Griffin though since his lyrics were a little darker (and, let’s face it, just plain better) than most of that other stuff. The 48 year old songwriter takes to the new listening room above Rock Brothers Brewing for what promises to be a clinic in AAA rock. If you’ve ever shed a tear to songs like Howie Day’s “Collide” or “Stuck Like Glue” from Sugar land, then you owe the man a hug. (The Attic, Ybor City) INFO
The Milos w/Boney Fiend/Silver Alert You so smart. Yup, this is a show featuring a Descendents cover band, and it happens to be their debut show, too. “We’re a shitty cover band,” is how the bio describes the group, “but the problem is the Descendents are fucking awesome.” The band — which includes hard working St. Promoter Nick Marcisin — promise to butcher the songs for anyone who shows, but this party should be long in the positive energy department.
