Tory Lanez w/Jacquees/Kranium/DJ VeeCee/Kurt rockmore Fans of Ginuwine’s “Pony” need to Google “R.I.D.E.” by Tory Lanez. On it, the 24-year-old Canadian reworks a late 1990s R&B classic into something muy-grindable for a new generation, and while Lanez (born Daystar Peterson) gets compared a lot to Drake, he is well on his way to carving out his own identity. First, he refuses to call himself a hip hop or R&B artist. He doesn’t even call himself a singer. “I make ‘Swavey’ music,” is how he described his output when interviewed by Vogue earlier this month. For a case study, listen to “Say It” and “To D.R.E.A.M.” from his band new LP, I Told You, back to back. On one track he’s silky smooth and slightly auto-tuned while the other finds him laying down bars like no one’s business.
