Are you guys ready for a new work week and some new tunes to soundtrack your weekly events? Here at Creative Loafing we have you covered! Selecting the 15 songs that make it on each edition of the Weekly Tune-Up is never an easy feat, when I'd prefer to share all of them, but an hour will have to do.
Two Door Cinema Club's glossy new record Gameshow was released this past Friday, and it shows the steady progression towards more of a mainstream rock sound. Gameshow is the third LP from the Irish band, and by far their most ambitious. It's not that they're relying on sing-a-long choruses or pop influenced production, but you can just hear the polish that oozes throughout the album. You can certainly see their transformation from when I saw them perform at Crowbar five years back. "Fever" is one the standout cuts and showcases lead man Alex Trimble's vocal talents and his excellent range. I can't help but think there is some heavy Prince and Bee Gees influence they channeled on this record.
EXES is a collabo project comprised of vocalist Allie McDonald and producer Mike Derenzo. They released their very personal EP, The Art of Saying Goodbye two weeks back, and I've enjoyed it. "Sherman Oaks" is a intimate story of how McDonald fell too hard and too fast for someone new. This song was part of her healing process moreover a situation I think we all can relate to. Mournful lyrics with mesmerizing beats come together to create a tidy six track offering that I found a very easy listen.
Rising band American Wrestlers have an upcoming record titled Goodbye Terrible Youth due out on November 4. Their new single "Hello, Dear" premiered last week only to add anticipation to early adopters of American Wrestlers. "Hello, Dear" is a euphoric jam that comes at you with rough edges, but features some lush harmonies. I'd be willing to bet American Wrestlers will attract a few new fans as their music receives a little more much deserved notice.
