We're back with another edition of the Weekend Tune-Up, and as usual, I'm trying to keep you guys and gals up-to-date with the freshest of tunes. Let's get started!
Even when the new release week is a little slow, I can still dig up 15 new jams for you to dig on (I keep them stockpiled). We all know Toronto has put itself on the hip hop map thanks to Drake. Now the door has been opened for others trying to earn some recognition, and through it steps Tory Lanez, a rapper/producer who's been dropping mixtapes and trying to make his break. His latest single "Say It" might just do that. Even if you don't like his style, you can't dismiss that beat, nor his sampling of Brownstone's '90s-era R&B cut, "If You Love Me." Nicely done. Speaking of Canada, Montreal-based Half Moon Run have a new track, "Trust," off their forthcoming record Sun Leads Me On (out October 23 in the U.S.). It's a bit more electronic than the folk-inspired tunes off their debut. I snatched another track from Night Beds' dreamy Ivywild, which was issued last week. It evokes Active Child, How To Dress Well and Washed Out all at once. Another new jam from Disclosure, why not? "Willing & Able" features British singer Kwabs, and the usual stellar production from the brothers.
A tune you shouldn't sleep on this week comes from Irish singer-songwriter James Vincent McMorrow. He's got an honest new song that I think everyone can relate to called "How to Waste a Moment." It's a soothing yet uncomfortable all at once. McMorrow has confessed, “Wasted moments. We had a lot of them. Even though I believe I’ve done the right thing at the time, when I look back I realize I actually made my life a lot more difficult. Not an uncommon tale. I rarely learn anything from the mistakes, in fact if I went back I’d probably do the same stuff all over again." With quirky production and those earnest lyrics, it's hard to not connect with this song. I thoroughly encourage you to not waste a moment, guys. Something we should all be better at.
