After playing Et Cultura St. Petersburg in 2017, New York rapper Talib Kweli (aka Twitter's "Racist Rapper Career Killer") is headlining Tampa Bay’s Obknoxious Party.
The legendary MC will take the stage at Crowbar in Ybor City on Sunday, September 1 alongside Philly rapper Crown Marquiss and two of Tampa’s best, Sam E. Hues and Jinx. A big highlight on the September 1 bill is the return of Tampa expats Dynasty and Demi Nova who recently moved to Los Angeles and the Asian continent, respectively.
Dynasty, as you know, collaborated with Kweli on a 2013 track, "Stay Shinin'".
Kweli’s appearance is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Obknoxious Party activities, which start with an August 29 kickoff party at Franklin Manor. Hip-hop producer Ski Beatz — who’s produced tracks for Kweli, Jay-Z, Curren$y and more — will also teach a production class on August 31 at new Ybor City studio The Dojo.
“Ski called me one day and asked to do a production class in Tampa,” event organizer DJ Knox told CL. Knox then called Hometown of the [beatsnchill] monthly, who suggested using the new production studio helmed by Hues and Grammy-nominated producer Maxx Forman. “The class is a chance to learn more about the Dojo plus the hardware and techniques Ski Beatz used. It’s an opportunity to learn from a legend.”
Another big name beatmaker Ape Drums (Major Lazer) is set to spin at The Estate in St. Petersburg on Monday, September 2. Obknoxious Party 2019 also sees the return of a DJ battle where the winner will take home $1,500 after battling at Coyote Ugly on September 3.
