✔️ Whigfest w/Tyler Childers/Trampled By Turtles/Liz Cooper and The Stampede/Southern Avenue/Flow Tribe/Front Country/Lindsay Lou/Have Gun, Will Travel/Los Colognes/The Trongone Band/The Honey Hounds/more As far as headliners go, Whigfest has completely knocked it out of the park in 2019. The annual President’s Day weekend festival is always a celebration of fantastic locals, and this year is no exception, but the inclusion of bluegrass shredders Trampled By Turtles (playing Saturday) and Tyler Childers (Sunday’s headliner) is a huge win. The Turts may be the best touring act in their scene right now, and the 27-year-old Childers is set to have a breakout year. The Kentucky songwriter’s latest LP, Purgatory, was produced by Sturgill Simpson and David Ferguson, and it rightfully landed on dozens of 2017 year-end best-of lists thanks to the way the album’s songs capture the beauty of his home state while also showcasing the Pulitzer-worthy prose that Childers’ wounded drawl delivers in heart-aching fashion. Whigfest’s cherry on top is the inclusion of fast-rising Nashville songwriter Liz Cooper, whose guitar arrangements and solos have made her band, The Stampede, one of the most sought-after psych-rock and folk bands in America. Read our interview with Cooper here. Five Ybor City venues will be utilized over the course of the weekend, and a schedule is posted at whigfest.com. (Various venues, Ybor City) INFO

Yonder Mountain String Band w/Handmade Moments It’s a wonder that WhigFest didn’t scoop up Yonder Mountain String Band for its lineup. The Colorado jamgrass quintet would’ve been a great fit, but instead it’s heading to Jannus, where it played a 2017 set in support of Philadelphia blues-rock jam scene favorite, G. Love. Yonder headlines this time around, so Conway, Arkansas folk-pop duo Handmade Moments handles opening duties. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg) INFO

✔️ Lee Scratch Perry w/Subatomic Sound System Pay your respects when legendary producer and dub pioneer Lee Scratch Perry comes to Orpheum for a show that’ll show youngsters why the 82-year-old is wholly responsible for a lot of the low-end bombast that a wide-ranging array of bands (Bob Marley, Beastie Boys and even The Clash) cite as life-changing. Emch and Noah Shachtman’s Subatomic Sound System project opens the show. (Orpheum, Ybor City) INFO

Dave Mason and Steve Cropper w/Lords of 52nd Street The music of Booker T and the MGs plus U.K. rock band Traffic get celebrated when a pair of prolific songwriters and brilliant guitarists — Dave Mason (Traffic) and Steve Cropper (BTMGs) — co-headline a Saturday-night concert that’ll feel like s classic blues and rock revue. Billy Joel tribute band Lords of 52nd Street opens the show. (Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater) INFO

✔️ Los Lobos In 2016, storied six-piece Los Lobos went to Clearwater’s Capitol Theatre and showcased superb musicianship plus an easy band chemistry that can only be forged over decades of gigs. CL’s reviewer enjoyed the show, but thought that the legendary Los Angeles blues-rock outfit never quite tapped into the the magic that renders a concert memorable. That writer returns to the scene on Saturday, and we’ll see what a Sunday-afternoon review has to say about the group’s first concert at the venue since that 2016 gig. Blueface Ascendant Los Angeles rapper Blueface says that his next full-length release features Drake and also drops this month. We’re just hoping he’s OK after getting picked up for felony gun possession on February 1 (he was released early the next morning). The arrest came a couple of months after the 22-year-old born Jonathan Porter was arrested in connection with a highway shooting, but we’re guessing that all of that trouble isn’t going to stop fans and heads from checking out one of L.A.’s most controversial rappers live and in the flesh. (Whiskey North, Tampa) INFO

Car Bomb Driver w/Pretty Voices/Hotel Life CL is still steady rocking with one of last year’s best Bay area albums (All That Glitters from Hotel Life). We’re hoping to see a lot of the big-country-meets-rock album played when Billy Summer and Captain Joe Harley join forces for Hotel Life’s set opening for local rock bands Pretty Voices and Car Bomb Driver at the VFW Post 39. An epic local rock bill with a $3 cover and equally affordable drinks, too. (VFW Post 39, St. Petersburg) INFO

Johnny Rawls It’s been a quarter of a decade since Johnny Rawls released his debut album, and the 67-year-old Mississippi-based bluesman is still turning heads. Rawls’ latest, I’m Still Around, is a Blues Foundation’s 40th Annual Blues Music Awards nominee for Soul Blues Album of the Year. He brings it to the Skipperdome for the Saturday night soulful scorcher. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa) INFO

He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not w/The Gay Men’s Chorus of Tampa Bay Ybor City’s The Lions Eye Institute transforms into a dark club and welcomes a bunch of hot and hunky cupids into the space all in anticipation of a Valentine’s cabaret performance from The Gay Men’s Chorus of Tampa Bay. Humor and hotties with a touch of pathos, too? Why not? (Lions Eye Institute for Transplant and Research, Tampa) INFO
