Flat Stanley’s Buck Sands told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that his latest project, Former Contenders, sounds like alt-country and Americana with rock and punk influences. Sands (vocals/guitar) is joined by Flat Stanley cohorts—former Tampa Bay Rowdie Fred Stolz (drums) and Derek Forrester (guitar)—in the lineup, which also features singer-songwriter Dave Kibby on guitar plus Poetry ‘n Lotion’s Tom Murray on bass. Local scene supernova, cellist and violin player Melissa Grady, adds the final touch.

Though Flat Stanley just rocked a Misfits tribute set at the Crowbar’s Hot Dog Party, Former Contenders has only played a few times since 2019, including a virtual Rock the Park last summer, so you might not want to pass up a chance to see this roster in action. Urbane Cowboys bring country-fied cowpunk to the bill along with a full band set by songwriter Adam Randall who’s released a shit ton of mighty fine Florida folk on Spotify.
