The little modern-rock station that could started with one of the weakest signals in the local big-radio market a few years back; now, WSUN-97.1 FM is an area favorite with a successful string of annual concerts and a reputation for making chancy ideas work (like its end-of-the-weekend ´80s-alternative show Sunday School, which has spun off to lunch-hour programming and regular weekend-long marathons). A bit behind the underground but unarguably ahead of the West Florida mainstream curve, 97X consistently breaks bands here that are just beginning to leak out of the major hip-rock metropolises. The station´s a favorite with both ends of its demographic, often making the competition look like classic rock stations only playing at remaining contemporary.
