Chavez’s stunning black-and-white set for A. R. Gurney’s Sylvia was the best ever in the new Stageworks space, not to mention the whole Bay area. This was a dream of an environment: a posh New York apartment with a view of the Manhattan skyline, a white sofa on a black and white spotted rug, a black and white striped floor, bookshelves filled with white books, and seven empty picture frames on blank white walls. It wasn’t the least bit realistic, and it was utterly splendid.
