The Defense Department is now assisting British Petroleum in dealing with the vast oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that continues to draw closer to shore.
Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano said today at the White House that the spill is "of national significance," and that federal resources will be used to try to mitigate it.
Meanwhile, Florida U.S. Senator Bill Nelson has written a letter to President Obama, calling on his administration to call for "an immediate halt to test wells and all other exploratory operations in coastal waters." And Nelson says he's filing legislation that would prohibit the Interior Department from on Obama's recent calls to expand offshore drilling.
