As the Herman Cain campaign continues to implode, political analysts, especially of the conservative variety, only have a few more choices to prop up as the alternative to the apparent inevitability of Mitt Romney giving his victory speech in Tampa next August.

As has been the case since the GOP campaign began, it’s always been Romney (and Huntsman and formerly Tim Pawlenty) vs. the Tea Party candidate for the battle for the nomination.

Pawlenty bailed out early, and though there has been some increased hype about Huntsman, the odds against him remain formidable.

And that Tea Party candidate? Cain has been the man over the past month, and perhaps he can survive the multiple charges of sexual harassment, but as has been documented extensively in that same time, he’s made an incredible amount of miscues on the stump and in his televised appearances.

Rick Perry keeps on being propped up, not because of his performance on the stump (just the opposite), but because of his impressive fundraising.

Now the GOP intelligentsia is hyping up….wait for it…..Newt Gingrich.

Take for example Pulitzer Prize-winning Wall Street Journal columnist Dorothy Rabinowitz, with her essay, “Why Gingrich Could Win.”
