For a sixth consecutive year, Florida Democrats have introduced legislation to try to go around the Electoral College system used to determine the winners of U.S. presidential elections.
Rep. Joe Geller, D-Aventura, on Tuesday proposed a measure (HB 69) that seeks to have Florida join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
The compact, which has drawn support from 16 states, is intended to set up a method for determining the winner of the presidential contest based on overall votes without having to amend the U.S. Constitution.
Similar proposals have repeatedly been introduced in the state House and Senate, with Geller sponsoring the House version each year. But with Republicans running both chambers, the proposals have died without any committee action.
Republican Donald Trump won Florida and its 29 electoral votes in 2016 and 2020.
