A Panhandle lawmaker/Congressional candidate has gifted us all with another reason to drink.
The News Service of Florida is reporting that Florida State Sen. Greg Evers, who is apparently trying to out-douche opponents in a Republican primary, announced Monday he wants to give away an AR-15.
"With terrorism incidents on the rise, both at home and abroad, protecting our constitutional rights has never been more important," Evers said in a prepared statement accompanying the announcement, according to NSF.
The announcement comes just over a week after the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, which took place at a gay nightclub in Orlando, hours away from Evers' NRA-humping bubble.
The gun he's giving away — to some lucky person who likes or shares his Facebook page — is similar to the one used in said mass shooting.
LGBT equality advocates, and people who don't think easy access to weapons that can mow down dozens in mere moments is a particularly good idea, are obviously outraged.
"I think it is tasteless, disrespectful, disgusting, political pandering at its worst," Stratton Pollitzer, deputy director of Equality Florida, told NSF. "The idea that he wants to put the same style assault rifle that was just used for mass murder into the hands of a random stranger is grotesque."
Evers is running in a primary against State Rep. Matt Goetz, who is heavily pro-gun and known for a racist tweet or two to boot, as well as newcomer James Zumwalt.
The District he's running for — District 1 — might be the most conservative in the state. It is right on the Florida-Alabama border and mostly comprises Escambia, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa and Walton counties.
So, yeah. Sensitive.
You know what? On second thought, let's ignore him. Seriously. Let's not give him another breath.
