On the Run
This weekend, Bayshore Boulevard serves as the setting for yet another Gasparilla event: The Bank of America 27th Annual Gasparilla Distance Classic (Feb. 5-6).

Voted the best race in Florida by Florida Running Magazine, Gasparilla Classic attracts a wide range of top-notch athletes who compete in various marathon events to help raise funds for youth charities and education foundations. This race is a huge deal, and even if you can't afford to run in it (or really just don't want to), you should at least come out and show your support. And if you're not interested in seeing the runners, there's also the free "Not For Runners Only Health and Fitness Expo," at the Tampa Convention Center (10 a.m.-8 p.m. Fri., Feb. 4, and 6 a.m.-5 p.m. Sat., Feb. 5, 333 S. Franklin St., Tampa, 813-274-8511).

The Expo features information on the latest medical breakthroughs and health and fitness demonstrations, as well as highlights from the most recent trends in shoe and running apparel. Tampa General Hospital also offers complimentary blood pressure testing and screenings for blood sugar and cholesterol (limit of 1,000 entrants).

The races occur Saturday and Sunday mornings (Feb. 5: 15K Wheelchair Division, 7:10 a.m.; 15K Runners, 7:15 a.m.; 5K Runners, 9:30 a.m. Feb. 6: Half Marathon, 6 a.m.; Marathon, 6:30 a.m.). If you're interested in registering or need details about fees, race times or any other important particulars, go to www.tampabayrun.com or call 813-254-7886.
