Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit played the Crowbar with Red Cortez on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 – another fine show hosted by Thx Mgmt.

One thing is certain… Americana fans are definitely a committed group. From the moment the music started, the outside patio emptied with people practically sprinting inside. The audience actually watched Red Cortez which is unusual for a relatively unknown opening act. As soon as Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit started setting up, people rushed the stage so they could be assured of a spot up front by the stage for their set. Upon reflection, it is probably a tad sad that the fact that people were actually paying attention to the bands merits mention.

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit

Hailing from Alabama, Jason Isbell is best known for his prior role as part of the Drive-By Truckers. Luckily, it was an amicable parting and accordingly the diehard-DBT fans have embraced Jason Isbell in his solo incarnation. Two albums into his new "solo" career, it is clear that Jason Isbell can stand solidly on his own two feet. Live, the band delivered an engaging set fluidly mixing old favorites with new tunes.

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit is Jason Isbell (guitar, keys, vocals), Jimbo Hart (bass, vocals), Browan Lollar (guitar, vocals, some percussion), Derry deBorja (keys) and Chad Gamble (drums).

Red Cortez

I didn't know who Red Cortez was before seeing them at this show. I definitely didn't know what to expect after checking out their myspace page sound description: "the sadist meets an angel on a broken porch." What I found was a young band exploring the bounds of roots rock… Frontman Harley Prechtel-Cortez is definitely charismatic with a powerful and unique voice (according to my friend Kelly – a bit like that guy from the black crowes), the music is straight up gospel rock but with a certain twist. I plan to keep an eye on these guys…
